Look, listen and learn at Georgian College auto show - September 13, 2008
Organized by students, giant outdoor exhibition features guest speakers, green zone and 200 cars
Next weekend marks the 23rd annual Georgian College Auto Show in Barrie.
This year's show promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Billed as the "largest outdoor auto show in North America," the Georgian College show attracts 20,000-plus visitors each year from across southern Ontario.
If you love cars, you won't want to miss the year's incredible lineup of vehicles, exhibits and attractions. More than 200 brand new cars and light trucks will be on display, including some 2009 models, along with specialty vehicles (Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Diablo and Shelby Cobra Mustang).
This year's show is focused on technological advancements in the automotive industry, with a strong emphasis on green initiatives.
A dedicated Green Zone will feature green vehicles, such as the Toyota Prius Hybrid, Lexus RX 400h Hybrid, Subaru P2 and the Honda Civic Hybrid.
Guest speakers from the automotive manufacturing sector and leading universities will talk about environmentally friendly technologies, and explain how consumers can do their part to reduce automotive emissions.
Georgian College 's environmental task force and Georgian Students for Environmental Awareness and Research (GEAR) will also promote environmental initiatives at the show.
Children are also encouraged to visit the show. There's a KidZone that features a jungle gym, magician, whirligig and other activities, along with snacks and refreshments.
For students interested in pursuing careers in the automotive industry, the Georgian College show provides an opportunity to rub shoulders with industry representatives and automotive students.
The show is a large, outdoor learning lab that provides Canadian Automotive Institute students practical, hands-on experience with manufacturers and customer service.
A live auction will be held on Sunday afternoon. Visitors can bid on automotive memorabilia, clothing, wakeboards and other items.
An art exhibit by renowned international artist Victor Tinkl will add an exciting creative dimension to the show.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the show is that it is entirely run by students.
An organizing committee, consisting of five automotive students, begins planning for the show in late October and work continues for almost a full year.
Students contact the auto manufacturers, local auto dealers, suppliers and vendors to arrange for their participation.
They secure sponsorships, book the guest speakers and ensure that all bylaws and safety regulations are met.
The five-student committee team is mentored by Georgian College staff, including show manager Hank Thibideau, assistant Elaine Murray, Karen Woods and CAI marketing officer Jennifer Sheremeto.
In addition, Auto Show Advisory Committee members, including representatives from the manufacturing and retail car sectors, serve as liaisons and advisers to the students, providing input on new ideas from an industry perspective.
For three days, the students who organize this show proudly represent the Canadian automotive industry and serve as ambassadors for the industry and CAI.
The time these students spend working on the show is in addition to their regular studies, which makes their accomplishment all the more admirable.
They should be applauded for all their hard work and dedication.
The Georgian College Automotive Show runs Friday to Sunday.
