A 2003 Minivan to the Trillium Gift of Life Network
On Friday February 21, 2003 in the south building of the Toronto Convention Center, during the very busy Canadian International Auto Show, the TADA handed over the keys to a 2003 Minivan to the Trillium Gift of Life Network. Accepting the keys, representing the Ontario Government was the Associate Minister of Health, Mr. Dan Newman. Representing the Trillium Gift of Life Network was the Chair of the Board of Directors, Mr. Brian Flood.
Now why am I writing about this event under 'Dealers Choice'' Since 1986 the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association have provided the use of a van, customized to accommodate multiple organ retrieval and transplantation and capable of transporting the medical team associated with organ and tissue donation. In 1986 the recipient organization was called 'Organ Donations Ontario', today it is known as 'Trillium Gift of Life Network.'
Trillium Gift of Life Network has been set up by the Ontario Government to handle and expand on this very important task. The TADA and its members want to work with this agency and are exploring other ways of getting the message of organ and tissue donation, to the general public. We need to publicize the message that donating organs and tissue does not only have to happen when a person dies or a donor is brain dead. Believe it or not, the human body has with some organs, the ability to rejuvenate, making live donating a very plausible and practical process.
And what about tissue donation' We all think that only hearts, lungs and kidneys are worthy donations. The truth of the matter is that tissue donation is also very important. How many of us realize this to be the case' I, for one had no clue!
Why does the TADA want to continue with its association with the Network' Car dealers love people! Yes, we trade in cars etc. but it is the people element that makes our business so very exciting. As an association, we value human life and we collectively believe that we can through our dealership network get the message across to the over 1 million people that enter our facilities in any given year.
By supporting this most worthy cause, we cross all barriers and do not worry about religion, colour, age or ethnic background. By supporting this cause we support life and the continuation of life. What better cause then to help one another understand the significance of organ and tissue donation. Knowledge is power; knowledge puts us in a better position to do what is right for us.
The members of the Toronto Automobile Dealers Association are pleased to work with the Province to help people in our community get back their lives. If this van can make the difference for just one patient then it will have more than done its job.
Thank You and until next week please DRIVE SAFELY!
