'Look Good, Feel Good' - Jun. 2, 2007
Auto detailing services are gaining in popularity as more drivers discover it makes them feel good
The other day, I had an interesting conversation with a customer named Rachel. She informed me of an investment she made that paid a handsome dividend. Naturally, I was curious to find out more.
I thought she was going to tell me about a stock purchase or an IPO that had taken off. Instead, Rachel told me quite a different story.
It had to do with her two-year-old luxury sedan. For months, Rachel had been feeling rather indifferent about her car. As a working mother of two, she spent a lot of time behind the wheel, and she didn't enjoy driving anymore.
Then, one day, a friend casually suggested that her car could use a proper cleaning, inside and out.
At first, Rachel pooh-poohed the idea. After all, she whisked her car through a car wash every couple of months. Wasn't that enough?
Her car had never been properly cleaned and, after two years of driving, much dirt, salt and debris had collected in the carpet, on the seats and under the wheel wells. The trunk contained rotting leaves, old shoes and various other junk.
Her car was so filthy that she was ashamed to drive friends and family members around. Her children often complained about how messy it looked (no doubt they contributed their fair share of the mess).
One day, Rachel had had enough. She heeded her friend's advice and bought an auto detailing package.
This service was worth $175 and included hand washing the interior and exterior, cleaning the wheels and tires, vacuuming the trunk, shampooing the mats and carpets, applying a wax polish by hand, washing the underbody, and more.
By her own admission, the service transformed Rachel's car into something bright, shining and almost new. It looked immaculate. More important was how this made Rachel feel about her car. It made her proud of her car again.
The point is this: Car owners spend a lot of money on their vehicles, and yet they often neglect the most basic care and maintenance.
Why shouldn't you feel good about driving your car? Getting your car cleaned is an easy and affordable thing to do, and it can leave you feeling a renewed sense of pride in your vehicle.
When car owners drive a new car for the first time, they feel pride of ownership and they genuinely enjoy the driving experience.
That good feeling can last months, if not years.
But that loving feeling can become lost over time, as cars accumulate dust and dirt and mould.
When a car starts looking the worse for wear, it becomes devalued.
Most new-car dealers in the GTA offer professional auto detailing services.
Some dealers perform the work on site; others outsource the work to nearby detailing shops.
Auto detailing costs about $100 to $200. More elaborate services are available for hundreds of dollars, but basic detailing services are very affordable.
In the past decade, I've seen a dramatic rise in the popularity of detailing, and more customers are requesting this service all the time.
Car owners are recognizing the importance of detailing in maintaining the value of their vehicles, and because of how it makes them feel about their vehicles.
As a dealer, I know how important detailing is to selling cars. Every new vehicle that arrives from the manufacturer is detailed before it is put on the lot for sale.
Conversely, whenever we accept a vehicle on trade, it is detailed before it is offered for sale to the public or at an auto auction.
If you are driving a car that could use some tender loving care, treat it (and yourself) to a detailing service.
You'll soon appreciate how a modest investment can improve your car's appearance and boost your mood. What's the old expression? When you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you do well.
Same applies with your car.
Like Rachel, driving a clean, spotless car is guaranteed to improve your mood and make you feel better about driving, and it will increase the value of your investment.
