World War II

In 1939, King George and Queen Elizabeth made cross-country tour. It was a beautiful summer and the depression was at an end. However, this bliss was short lived. World War 2 exploded onto the headlines in September when Nazi Germany launched its infamous blitzkrieg attack on Poland.

Before it ended, more than a million Canadian men and women were in uniform. There was work aplenty on the home front. The war machine had the wheels of industry turning, and the smooth strains of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey or Canada's own Bert Niosi could be heard across factory floors.

But the war also brought gasoline rationing and an almost complete stoppage of new car production until 1947. You could still buy a good used car at affordable prices, according to the TADA's Used Car Guide of November 1942, a 1941 Chevrolet sedan went for $665, while a 1940 Chrysler coupe could be purchased for $705. New car prices ranged from $2,391 for a top of the line series McLaughlin- Buick to only $1,178 for a Dodge coupe.
